Cohousing Comes to
Life
The dream of living together
within a community of friends and acquaintances is getting closer
for the members of Jackson Place Cohousing (aka Seattle Cohousing).
Located between Charles & Dearborn on Hiawatha the 27-unit project
will be a mix of townhouses and flats with underground parking.
The foundation and retaining walls of the project are nearly completed
and construction of the individual units will start soon. The move-in
date is slated for Nov. 2001.
Some members of JPC have
been working on this alternative style of housing for over three
years and have had the continuing support of the Jackson Place Community
Council, one reason for the new name. JPCC plans to hold their monthly
meetings in the dining room of the large common house.
The common house facilities
and central pedestrian courtyard are designed to encourage family
activities and member interaction unlike typical condominiums. Respect,
security, support, activism, diversity, and shared resources such
as childcare and tools are key aspects of cohousing. JPC members
are acting as their own developers, hiring their own architect,
project manager, and local contractor. Members include teachers,
retirees, doctors, computer programmers, and homemakers. Anyone
is welcome; there are no religious or political affiliations.
Units are still available.
Prices start at $199,000. For more information on the project call
Kathy Sellars at 206-522-3099 or check the website at www.seattlecohousing.org.
